Competitive Baseball FAQ

Q.  What is Competitive Baseball?

A.  Competitive baseball is an opportunity for players with a higher skill level and aptitude for the game to play against higher level competition around the Greater Cincinnati area.  Players must attend a summer tryout and be chosen to participate on a competitive team by a group of evaluators.

Q.  How old does my child have to be to play competitive baseball?

A.  Typically, competitive baseball begins at the C-2 level (5th grade).  Competitive baseball is available via SBSA all the way through high school if an adequate number of players is interested in playing at that level.

Q.  When are tryouts held and how will I be notified of them?

A.  Tryouts are usually held in the summer after the completion of the current season.  Multiple sessions are typically scheduled in order to accomodate summer vacation and camp schedules.  Tryout notifications are posted on our web site and in certain cases, sent via and email Broadcast to all currently registered SBSA players.

Q.  How are players evaulated during the tryouts?

A.  The evaluation is skills based and setup by the Competitive Baseball Coordinator.  Pitching skills are very desireable for competitive baseball due to the number of games played.  The following skills are typically evaluated:
  • Hitting (hitting mechanics, contact, power)
  • Infielding (footwork, glovework, arm strength/accuracy)
  • Outfielding (catching technique, arm strength/accuracy, speed to ball)
  • Running (technique and speed)
  • Pitching (mechanics, accuracy, speed, variety of pitches)
  • Catching (mechanics, arm strength/accuracy)

Q.  What league(s) do competitive teams play in?

A.  Most competitive teams play in what is called the Division 1 league of Greater Cincinnati Knothole.  In some cases however, teams will play in an American Amateur Baseball Congress (AABC) league which allows more flexibility in number of games played and strength of competition.

Q.  How many games are played and what are the costs?

A.  On average, most competitive teams play a 25-30 game schedule which may include some tournament play.  The cost is typically around $400 but that could vary based on the number of games played, league fees, and uniform costs.

Q.  Who do I contact if I have questions about Competitive Baseball?

A.  Andy Fredette is our Competitive Baseball Coordinator and can be reached via email at:
